Using advanced synthetic interview technology, this application offers an interactive exploration of Charles Darwin's life and scientific contributions. Developed through a collaboration between Duquesne University biology professor John Pollock and the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University—creators of the synthetic interview platform—it allows users to select from a curated list of questions directed at a virtual Darwin, portrayed by actor Randy Kovitz, a Pittsburgh native and Carnegie Mellon drama alumnus. The inquiries encompass Darwin's explorations, core principles of evolution, societal reactions to his theories, his childhood, personal peculiarities, and related topics. Additionally, commentary from over a dozen contemporary biologists, religious scholars, an ACLU attorney, and other experts enriches the discussion, providing perspectives beyond Darwin’s original 19th-century context.

The questions answered by Darwin are derived from more than 1,000 interviews with K-12 students and adults. These have been distilled into the 199 most frequently asked questions, with answers compiled by Dr. David Lampe using Darwin’s own words—drawing from his extensive writings, including notes, books, autobiographies, and thousands of personal letters accessible via the Darwin Correspondence Project. Funding for this project was primarily provided by the National Institutes of Health/Science Education Partnership Awards (SEPA) and the John Templeton Foundation.
